How to Pay for a Taxi in Istanbul
A metered taxi charges in Turkish lira, so ask before you set off if you hope to pay another way. With a pre-booked taxi, the price and the way of paying are agreed before you fly. We list our fares in euros and take no payment on this website. This guide covers both options.
How Do I Pay a Taxi From the Rank?
- The meter shows the fare in Turkish lira, so it helps to have some lira ready
- Ask the driver before you leave whether a card can be used
- If you pay in another currency, agree the amount first and check the rate
- Count your change, and ask for a receipt if you need one
How Do I Pay for a Pre-Booked Taxi With You?
We confirm your fare in writing first and then tell you how to pay. The accepted methods are set out on our payment and security page: cards are processed on a licensed payment provider's secure page with 3D Secure, in euros or in Turkish lira at the daily rate. Cash to the driver is possible where it has been agreed in writing before the journey.
Should I Change Money at the Airport?
You only need enough for your first few needs. Airport exchange desks and cash machines are available at both airports, but rates vary, so compare before you commit. Check with your own bank about fees for using your card abroad.
Do I Need to Tip?
Tipping is your choice. Our fare already includes everything we charge for, and no tip is expected. If your driver has been especially helpful, a small tip is always welcome, but you should never feel pressed for one.
